AN aircraft hangar that has not housed a plane for 25 years is finally to be dismantled.

Ports of Jersey received planning permission to take down the empty building earlier in the year and work is due to begin soon.

The hangar was built in 1958. In its later years it was used to store ground equipment but is now vacant.

The contract for the work has been awarded to Rok and the Jersey Demolition Company.

Work to clear the interior of the building will start within the next few weeks while specialists will ensure that asbestos is removed safely.

The dismantling of the entire structure should be complete by March of next year.

Airport operations director Ashley Maggs said: “As the building is dismantled we will be evaluating the site and considering its future use, once the Airport’s future operational requirements are finalised.”
