HOT-weather guidance has been issued by the government as signs of summer begin to show.

The Island recorded a temperature of 29.2°C by mid-afternoon on Monday – the highest so far this year, surpassing the figure of 28.9°C seen towards the end of June.

Duty forecaster Enzo Davy said that today and tomorrow would see similar temperatures, which are expected to “drop-off” around Thursday.

The government yesterday issued hot-weather guidance, stating that: “Extreme heat can cause heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and dehydration.

“Older people and children are particularly at risk.”

Government tips on how to stay cool during the hot spell include:

  • Avoiding going outside during the hottest time of day (11am to 3pm)

  • Leaving strenuous activities for later on in the day when it is cooler

  • Taking cold baths and showers

  • Drinking plenty of water and avoiding coffee and alcohol

  • Keeping your home cool by closing curtains, opening windows and using fans

  • Wearing a hat and loose, light clothing and trying to stay in the shade

  • Wearing sun cream when going outside
