A REVIEW of existing health and safety legislation is to take place following the conviction of two paramedics, the Social Security Minister has said.

During question time in the States Assembly, Deputy Helen Miles asked the minister, Deputy Lyndsay Feltham, whether she was happy that the conviction of John Sutherland and Tom Le Sauteur demonstrated an appropriate application of the law.

Deputy Feltham, who has responsibility for health and safety legislation, said: “I would like to offer my condolences to the family of the man who died – it has been an incredibly difficult situation for all involved, and an emotional one. I am limited in what I can say but I can say that I will review the Health and Safety at Work law.”

The matter was also raised by Deputy Inna Gardiner, who asked Home Affairs Minister Mary Le Hegarat what was being done to support morale among Ambulance Service staff.

Deputy Le Hegarat said there were regular meetings for senior staff, with all employees being offered ongoing support.

The minister said she could not comment on a further question from Deputy Gardiner about whether she expected resignations from the Ambulance Service as a result of the recent court case.

“That is drifting into a matter for human resources and I am not really able to say at this stage,” she said.
