Four people – including two children – in hospital after home explosion

TWO adults and two children escaped without life-threatening injuries after a huge explosion ripped the front off their property on Wednesday night.

Debris was blown across the road and onto nearby vehicles following the blast on Mont Pinel, off Mont Millais.

The area is currently cordoned off. Islands Energy has confirmed it is supporting the emergency services and that the cause of the blast is unknown.

Speaking to the JEP this morning, a neighbour said: “I was asleep in bed and all of a sudden there was this massive blast.

“I don’t know what caused it but it was very powerful. The front of the property has gone and you can now see inside the property and there is debris all over my van.

“The firefighters were at the scene and I think they got everyone to safety.”

In a statement, the States police said: “Emergency services were called to an incident that caused significant damage to a property at Le Mont Pinel, St Saviour, just before 11pm on Wednesday, 26th June.

“This was declared a major incident, and that status remains. States of Jersey Police are at the scene to secure the site.

“Two adults and two children were transported to the General Hospital for medical attention. They are stable with no life-threatening injuries.

“Four households were evacuated as a precaution with Government of Jersey providing on-going support.

“The incident is being investigated and the cause remains unknown.

“The area around Le Mont Pinel is closed but traffic around the area is not affected and Mont Millais is open.

“Please be advised that as investigations proceed, further updates will be provided as they become available.”

St Saviour Constable Kevin Lewis said that there was “a loud bang” heard around 11pm on Wednesday night.

He continued: “We were notified soon after and opened St Saviour’s Parish Hall and staff came in, neighbours were evacuated as a precaution up to the parish hall.”

He added that the residents had since gone to stay with friends or relatives and at least one family had gone to a hotel.

“The parish has a system in place for these types of eventualities.”

An Island Energy spokesperson said: “We can confirm that we are supporting the Emergency Services who are dealing with an incident that occurred just before 11pm in the vicinity of Le Mont Pinel, St Saviour on Wednesday, 26th June.

“The incident is being investigated and the cause remains unknown.”
