A TEENAGE Islander with a rare bone disorder has praised the community policing team who made him “the star of the night” after escorting him to prom.

Kevin Teles (17), who has brittle bone disease, was given celebrity treatment on Thursday evening when four officers from the States police – PS Bowler, PC Shatford, PC Woolley and PC O’Donnell – dropped him off on the Royal Yacht’s red carpet for the Le Rocquier school prom.

His mother, Sonia Teles, said he had been “suffering so much recently”, and “in and out of intensive care” and had seen a story online where a student with a health condition travelled to their prom with a special police escort.

She said: “We contacted the police station and so quickly they said yes, of course.

“It was really nice, everybody was very emotional, I saw some people crying. He was the star of night.”

She added that she was “crying so much, she couldn’t even take photos”.

Speaking to the JEP the morning after, Mr Teles said it had been a night he would “never forget”.

He added: “I was a bit nervous when I saw the two motorbikes, but when I saw the cars, I wasn’t nervous anymore. I really liked it, and I’m so thankful for the police cars.

“So thankful to the police station and all the officers who did that for me.

“My friends said that I was the star of the night and they never saw something like that before. It was such a fun night.”

The States police, posting on their social media, also praised the officers for doing an “awesome job”.

The force added: “Now this is how to make an entrance to your Prom. Have a great evening Kevin and glad that we could be a part of making it such a special evening for you.”

PC Shatford also posted on his social media afterwards, saying: “I love policing. I really love community policing. But today was extra special. I got to escort young Kevin to his prom after his request for a police escort.

“Thank you for making me part of your day Kevin. It made my year. I love community policing.”
