ISLANDERS now have another two weeks to see Corbière Lighthouse lit up to mark its 150th anniversary.

Gold floodlighting was due to finish on Sunday but Ports of Jersey have extended this until 12 May due to “popular demand”.

And the coastal landmark will be floodlit in white on 2 May to mark the funeral of 84-year-old Ann Robins, who died when the car she was in fell off a ledge nearby.

The lighthouse has helped seafarers to navigate local waters since it was first lit on 24 April 1874.

The extension will also see Corbière Lighthouse lit up for both Liberation Day and National Fishing Remembrance Day, which aims to raise awareness of the dangers of fishing as a profession and to remember those who have lost their lives at sea.

Harbourmaster Bill Sadler said that Islanders’ response to the illuminations had been beyond expectations.

He said: “We have been delighted and overwhelmed by the positive reaction to this celebration of the 150th anniversary of the lighthouse.

“The area has been very popular in the evenings and I have seen some amazing photos.

“I hope this extension will offer more time for people to view the sight in person, while also providing a backdrop to Jersey’s national day, and the remembrance day for commercial fishers.”

Ports thanked the St Brelade honorary police and residents of the area for supporting the tribute.
