PORTS of Jersey has been given planning permission to dismantle a hangar at the Airport that was beyond repair.

Constructed in 1958, the hangar is currently used to store ground equipment and has not housed an aircraft in 25 years.

Although the building has received regular inspections since 1999, all of which showed the structure did not pose an immediate risk, Ports said that dismantling the hangar was considered to be the best option due to high winds effecting its external cladding.

Airport operations director Ashley Maggs said: “This building served the Island well for many years, but it is no longer possible to remedy its defects.”

A decision will be made in the future on what to do with the site once the hangar is demolished, according to Ports.

Mr Maggs said: “We are continuing to evaluate how we can best incorporate the site into Jersey Airport’s master planning process.”

A temporary parking compound will be provided to allow contractors to safely dismantle the building.
