A DEDICATED acute mental-health facility within Clinique Pinel in St Saviour could open by May, ending years of delays, Jersey’s director of mental health and adult social care has said.

Work on the facility began in September 2020, after a 2019 report laid bare the inadequate support received by patients in the “dilapidated” and “uninviting” Orchard House. Its rooms resembled prison cells, the report’s authors said.

Contractors have now handed Clinique Pinel back to the Health Department, although more work was needed, director of mental health and adult social care Andy Weir told the Health and Social Services Scrutiny Panel.

The fire doors “weren’t correct” to accommodate and transport mental-health patients, he said.

But work to resolve this was now under way, he added, saying that he expected the move from Orchard House to Clinique Pinel could take place in the last week of April, or the first week of May.

It has previously been reported that the new centre will have 26 ensuite bedrooms and other facilities.
