A MAN has been convicted of two counts of raping a woman and two of assaulting her.

David Nigel Pearce (41) was found guilty today following a two-week trial in the Royal Court.

The jury found him guilty of the two rapes and one of the assaults by a majority verdict of ten to two, and another of the assaults by 11 to one.

He was found not guilty of two other charges of rape and one of assault.

During the trial, the court heard that Pearce had grabbed the woman by the throat, pinned her down and forced himself on her.

He was also said to have come to her workplace and shouted abuse at her.

But he claimed that she was lying about the attacks and had been violent towards him.

Pearce was remanded in custody to appear in court again next Friday, when he will receive a date for his sentence.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Verity Thomas, praised the victim’s bravery in coming forward.

She said: “I’m sickened by Pearce’s abhorrent behaviour and the pain he has caused the complainant who has shown immense courage in coming forward and giving live evidence in court.

“It is down to her courage that he has been convicted today. It has had a massive impact on her life, but hopefully she can now begin to recover.”
