Man sentenced for driving illegally and stealing a tank of fuel

A MAN who drove his car to a petrol station without a licence or insurance – and stole £40 worth of fuel – has been sentenced to 120 hours of community service.

In addition to the community service, Zakeil Brown (33) was also fined £500 and banned from driving for a year.

The offences took place just eight months after a previous conviction for driving without a licence or insurance, in March last year.

St Brelade Centenier Amanda Wright, prosecuting, told the Magistrate’s Court that Brown drove to Roberts West forecourt on 22 November, filled his car with fuel, and drove off without paying.

It was later discovered that the vehicle was registered to another family member and that he did not hold a valid driving licence.

Brown has now paid the garage back for the petrol.

Magistrate Bridget Shaw said she was imposing stiffer than usual penalties because of the previous conviction in March.

She told Brown: “You clearly haven’t taken on board the message.”
