THE Weighbridge ice rink proved so popular that it is to reopen later this year, organisers have said.

The government-backed Jersey Development Company, which operated the rink between 17 November and 18 February, have now bought the attraction.

They plan to reopen the rink from the October half-term to the end of the February school holidays in 2025.

The JDC hope the venue will be as successful as the recent opening, which saw 45,000 skaters – aged between three and 98 – take to the ice during the three months.

The company provided free admission to all primary schools, resulting in 1,990 young children enjoying complimentary skating sessions.

Additionally, secondary schools were offered half-price tickets, leading to 2,805 students taking to the ice.

The JDC also donated 50pm from each full-price ticket sale to charity, raising £20,000 which will be shared equally among five organisations.

Le Henry, the JDC’s chief executive, said: said: “Following a suggestion from Deputy Lucy Stephenson to reintroduce a Christmas ice-rink, we undertook a challenge within a limited timeframe to procure not only an ice rink, but also a sufficiently large marquee.

“The installation was delayed by Storm Ciarán in November, but the team successfully overcame the obstacles and, as planned, we opened our doors to the public on Friday, 17 November.

“We took the decision to extend the rink’s duration beyond the Christmas holidays, concluding at the end of the recent February half-term.

“The team implemented various activities at the rink such as DJ disco sessions, curling, ice hockey and special visits from Santa and his elves on Christmas Eve.

“Children’s favourite super-hero and ice princess also came to visit the rink every other Sunday.

“Despite adverse weather conditions that led to temporary closures for safety reasons, we were delighted that the attraction brought so much enjoyment to the broader community.

“I express my gratitude to the whole team and everyone involved for their dedication and hard work, contributing to the success of this event for everyone’s enjoyment.”
