THE future of The Body Shop in Jersey is unclear after the UK arm of the business announced it would be appointing administrators this week.

Staff at the store in Jersey were unable to offer a comment about the situation after Aurelius, the private-equity firm that bought the business for £207 million in November, decided that the company had insufficient working capital following disappointing Christmas sales.

There are hopes that insolvency practitioners may be able to negotiate lower rates in order to bring down day-to-day costs and save some stores.

The Body Shop was founded by Anita Roddick in 1976 and pioneered environmentally friendly and ethical practices in the beauty industry. It now has more than 3,000 stores in more than 65 countries.
