JERSEY Met has issued snow and ice alerts for the Island – but the risk of significant disruption is low.

For days, meteorologists have been wrestling with a very uncertain forecast for tonight and tomorrow.

A band of rain is set to move up from the south-west, but the computer models used by forecasters have been giving varying predictions on whether it will turn to sleet or snow as it hits the cold air covering the whole of the British Isles.

Jersey Met has now issued a yellow snow alert – the lowest level warning – stating that there could be sleet or snow this evening and tomorrow afternoon, with a “low risk” of temporary accumulations of up to 2cm.

A yellow-level ice warning has also been issued, with the possibility of freezing rain causing icy surfaces tonight.

Parts of northern France are expected to see very heavy snowfall, with as much as 1ft settling in places.

It is expected to turn milder during the weekend, with temperatures rising to about 11°C on Sunday.

However, the UK Met Office says there is an increased risk of colder conditions returning later in the month.
