ISLANDERS now have a chance to try a popular Finnish pastime while looking at Elizabeth Castle.
A pop-up sauna – the second of its kind in the Island – has opened on the beach at West Park.
Sandy Toes Sauna, launched by Blair Talibard with help from his partner Alex Harris, is a traditional Finnish-inspired wood-burning sauna.
The sauna also has a cold-water plunge pod for braver Islanders, such as JEP photographer Dave Ferguson (pictured).
Mr Talibard, a cold-water sea swimmer, said he had been inspired by the rising popularity of saunas and what he said were the benefits of hot and cold therapy.
He added: “I thought that this idea would be great for Jersey.
“The benefits of saunas are endless.”
Mr Talibard said the sauna made him “feel like a million dollars”. He continued: “It makes me feel more relaxed: my muscles feel better, I sleep like a baby and it has even improved my skin.”
Jersey’s first pop-up sauna was launched by Cole McLean in July at the Watersplash, before it moved close to St Catherine’s Breakwater in October for the winter. Mr McLean recently had a planning application for the sauna refused, prompting concerns it may have to move again (full story on page 4).
Mr Talibard said: “I think there is definitely a market for two saunas on the Island”.
He said he selected West Park as a first location, as it has a high number of visitors and a view of Elizabeth Castle. However, the moveable sauna – as the name suggests – is due to “pop up” in different coastal areas.
Plans include a visit to El Tico from 24 to 29 January for the full moon, while it will appear near the Ommaroo Hotel during the February school break.
