JERSEY is set to be hit by severe weather – with the risk of flooding and winds gusting to 60mph.

An intense area of low pressure is expected to bring a spell of heavy rain and severe-gale-force nine winds on Thursday.

A red wind warning for storm-force-ten winds and gusts to 75mph has been issued for the wider Channel Islands area.

In an update on Thursday afternoon, Jersey Met said the winds were expected to peak between 5pm and 7pm. Up to 20mm of rain was likely to fall, bringing the risk of flooding to low-lying areas.

The government said: “Your safety is our primary concern.

“Teams from Jersey Met, Infrastructure & Environment, States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service, States of Jersey Police and honorary police, Jersey Water, and Andium are actively monitoring the evolving weather situation with visits to residents in the Grands Vaux area, as well as the erection of flood defences, being undertaken to mitigate the potential impact of flooding.

“We urge all residents to take appropriate precautions, stay informed, and follow the advice issued by the Government of Jersey, Jersey Met and Emergency Services.”

High pressure is expected to build in over the weekend, bringing dry but cold conditions. By the start of next week, temperatures are expected to rise no higher than 6°C
