Cost of driving licences to rise from next year

THE price of a Jersey driving licence is to increase for the first time in six years.

From 1 January, the cost of a ten-year full licence will rise by £20 to £70.

And the cost of six-month provisional licences will rise from £20 to £30.

The online driving licence application service has also been expanded to allow Islanders to renew their provisional licence – as well as full licences – digitally. In addition, those wishing to learn to drive can now apply online for a first provisional licence.

Infrastructure Minister Tom Binet approved the increase, which was requested by the Constables’ Committee.

Its chair, Constable Mike Jackson, said: “This is the first increase in charge for a driving licence since 2017. The increases are in line with the change in the retail price index over the last six years.

“We are also very pleased to announce that the online driving licence service has been expanded. For many parishioners, a well-designed online service is now a more convenient option than a paper form.”

The online service allows users to submit a “selfie” as the photograph for their licence.

Some documents, such as proof of identity and test pass, will still need to be provided to the parish before the application is processed.
