FARMER Dougie Richardson has been announced as the new president of the Jersey Farmers’ Union.

The Islander, who works at Morville Farm in St Ouen and comes from one of Jersey’s oldest farming families, had served as vice-president since 2011 and has taken over from Peter Le Maistre, who has held the position for seven years.

Honorary treasurer Barrie Hamel has also retired after seven years in the job.

Mike Renouard has taken over as vice-president and Chris Le Marquand is the new honorary treasurer.

Mr Richardson, whose farm is renowned for its Jersey Royals, said “It is a great honour to lead the Jersey Farmers’ Union. Peter will be a hard act to follow and I hope to build on the collaborative approach he maintained in working with others on matters that affect the agricultural industry.

“I particularly look forward to working with all sectors of our industry, as well as other organisations, to ensure that farming in Jersey remains vibrant and viable.”
