JERSEY’S Customs officers foiled two major drugs importations which they say would have fuelled other related crime in the Island.

Jeffrey George Witsey, from London, was yesterday jailed for 10½ years for attempting to smuggle cocaine and ecstasy worth £368,000 into the Island on board a ferry.

The 60-year-old claimed he used cocaine as a coping mechanism after witnessing the 2017 London Bridge terror attack.

In a separate case in Jersey’s Royal Court, Sean Aboh was locked up for seven years for trying to smuggle £290,000 worth of heroin into the Island on a plane from Gatwick.

Luke Goddard, senior manager at Customs, said “Our officers continue to show a high level of vigilance at the border and have prevented exceptionally large quantities of dangerous drugs getting to the streets of Jersey, which would have fuelled other related crime.

“Undoubtedly the disruption caused to the syndicates involved in targeting the Island will be significant and the resulting sentences have shown how the court has recognised the seriousness of these offences.”
