ISLANDERS gathered at the weekend for a memorial gig to pay tribute to a father and son who were tragically killed in a suspected hit-and-run.
Chambers played host to the Lowe’s Legacy Gig in memory of Dean Lowe (48) and 11-year-old Charlie, who died after being hit by a vehicle in Grouville in August.
A 28-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and failing to stop and report an accident. He was later released on bail.
A host of local acts took to the stage on Saturday, including Beatles tribute band, the Beantles, and a Mad-Chester mash-up involving musicians who had played with Dean and knew him.
Alison Blance, who helped organise the gig alongside Toni O’Flaherty, said it was a “huge success” with “everyone in good spirits”.
“There was a lot of singing and dancing but everyone knew why we were there,” she added.
The “Lowe’s Legacy Fund” – managed by the Jersey Community Foundation – was launched last week in memory of the pair after more than £50,000 was raised through a fundraising page set up by Craig Le Boutillier, the brother of Dean’s fiancée, Ashleigh.
The aim of the fund is to “have a positive impact in the Island for performing arts”, one of Dean and Charlie’s “passions in life”.
The legacy fund will promote accessibility to the arts and music, support disadvantaged communities in the Island and aid development of those with learning disabilities.
Dean was honoured in absentia at this year’s JEP Pride of Jersey Awards, winning the Gary Burgess Award for his tireless work as a campaigner for inclusion, a charity fundraiser and a champion for disability.
