12 Bays of Christmas challenge back again

SEASONED swimmers are being encouraged to brave the cold for charity again this year and sign up for the 12 Bays of Christmas challenge.

Registration is now open for the event, in which hardy Islanders are asked to take a dip in chilly waters in December.

Each bay on the list has a festive name – including “Port let it Snow” and “Jingle all the Ouaisné” – and participants are invited to come along in swimming fancy dress.

The challenge aims to raise funds for the National Trust for Jersey and Jersey Hospice Care, who jointly organise the event.

The opening swim will be taking place at Bouley Bay on Saturday 2 December, with hot drinks and mince pies provided by the Coop.

Only those who are medically fit should take part, with information about how to stay safe during and after a cold-water swim provided.

The challenge follows the 30 Bays in 30 Days sea swimming event, which encourages Islanders of all ages to swim a minimum of 30 strokes in 30 different bays in July. Participants of that event this summer raised £20,000 for the two charities.

The winter edition has no target time, distance or number of strokes for swimmers, as the emphasis is for people to take part within their limitations.

This year’s event is supported by contractors F Nicholson & Son Ltd.
