ARMISTICE Day and Remembrance Sunday this year will not only commemorate fallen soldiers but will also mark the Cenotaph’s 100th anniversary.

A short service is planned on Sunday, at which the Island’s highest-ranking leaders will be in attendance.

A two-minute silence is also due to be observed today to mark the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice.

The Cenotaph on the Parade was unveiled on the fifth anniversary of the Armistice in 1923, after a temporary memorial made from wood was used for five years.

The monument commemorates Jersey soldiers who died during the First and Second World Wars.

The Bailiff, Sir Timothy Le Cocq, said: “As we have often shown, indeed as recently as last week, we come together when needed, as a community, to support and aid our fellows and, at other times, to celebrate, commemorate and to remember.

“This Sunday is our annual gathering and act of remembrance for those who gave their lives during service in the armed forces.

“We are mindful in particular in the light of recent events that the world is far from free of armed conflict as we gather to remember our fallen and the hope of peace.”
