A PENSIONER who crashed into the wall of a home in St Brelade said it happened because he sneezed while driving.

Brian Lister did not report the accident because he said he could not see any damage.

The 74-year-old admitted charges of careless driving and failing to report an accident, when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The court heard that he had been driving along Mont Les Vaux at 2.40pm on 7 September when he sneezed and momentarily lost control of his car.

St Peter Centenier Joao Camara said a woman living nearby heard a loud bang when the car crashed into the wall outside her house but did not see the accident take place.

Lister said he had got out of the vehicle to look at the wall but did not notice any signs of damage. However, the crash had created a large crack.

When the States police appealed for information about the incident, Lister admitted that he was responsible.

The court also heard that he had been well within the speed limit when it happened and that these were his first offences in 55 years of driving.

Assistant Magistrate Adam Clarke fined him £700 for careless driving and a further £500 for failing to report the accident.
