A TURTLE nicknamed Barnacle Bill is being cared for by an animal charity after being washed ashore during Storm Ciarán.

A couple spotted the young loggerhead turtle – which got its name because its rear is covered in barnacles – while walking along Chouet in Guernsey.

Steve Byrne, GSPCA manager, said “The turtle… is currently in our wildlife room and will need warming up very slowly over the coming weeks.

“It is likely Barnacle Bill got caught in Storm Ciarán as they should be in the warm waters of the Mediterranean.”

He added: “We had a loggerhead turtle seven years ago which we named Olivia but she was a full grown adult and also Myrtle, a green turtle, nearly 20 years ago.

“The winds and the storm have sadly caused a lot of damage and our wildlife have really struggled but we are here 24/7 when needed.”

The shelter suffered extensive damage in the storm. Anyone wishing to make a donation to help with repairs is being asked to phone the centre on 01481 257261; post a cheque to GSPCA, Rue des Truchots, St Andrews, Guernsey GY6 8UD or click here
