ISLANDERS have been treated to one of the brightest displays of the Northern Lights seen in Jersey for years.

The skies off the north coast were lit up with flares of red and pink as a major geomagnetic storm sent the lights much further south than normal.

The aurora borealis can often be seen across northern parts of the UK but are rarely visible from the Channel Islands.

Photographer Marc Whitehead, who captured the spectacular sight from several places along the north coast, said: “These pictures don’t really do it justice, but when I was travelling to different locations there was a short period of being able to see the pink pillars with the naked eye.

“It’s by far the strongest I’ve seen it here in Jersey.”

The northern lights occur as a consequence of solar activity and result from collisions of charged particles in the solar wind colliding with molecules in the Earth’s upper atmosphere.
