SCHOOLS will remain closed on Friday in the wake of widespread devastation caused by Storm Ciarán, the government has confirmed.
The storm, which was declared a “major incident” on Wednesday evening, battered the Island overnight with the clear-up operation continuing.
Emergency services have answered calls from hundreds of Islanders who have seen their homes and property damaged, with many roads across Jersey also still blocked by fallen trees.
So far 69 adults and 15 children have been taken to hotel accommodation after their homes were severely damaged in the storm. Three people have been taken to hospital, with one subsequently discharged, while other affected Islanders shelter in parish halls.
In an update provided on Thursday afternoon, the government said schools would remain closed tomorrow “to help assess damage and reopen roads” with the aim of reopening them on Monday.
Some non-urgent health appointments have also been cancelled, according to the government, and there has been “minor damage” to the General Hospital. The government said the roof was intact, with minor water ingress in some areas, including inpatient and maternity.
The St Saviour’s hospital site remains open despite falling trees, but the following health services remain closed or suspended:
-
Enid Quenault Health and Wellbeing Centre
-
Day centres
-
Le Bas
-
Home birth service
Government advice is to stay at home and only travel if essential.
The Emergency Department remains open for life threatening, serious illnesses, or injury. The Mental Health Crisis Team remains operational 24/7 at 445 290.
Patients called to attend an appointment at the Hospital should allow extra time to get there.
