ALL government schools are to close on Thursday following forecasts of severe weather which could be as bad as the Great Storm of 1987.

Storm Ciarán, which could bring winds of more than 85mph, is expected to cause widespread disruption overnight Wednesday and much of the following day.

The government said: “Both the Strategic Command Group and the Council of Ministers have met this morning and they have confirmed that – given the significant risks posed by Storm Ciarán – all government schools and colleges will close on Thursday 2 November.

“A decision on school openings for Friday 3 November will be made, based on an assessment of any damage to schools and colleges, and the ongoing risks.

“Private schools and early years providers are being provided with the same advice as Government of Jersey schools and colleges.”

Guernsey has also announced that schools will be closed on Thursday.
