Storm Ciarán: Islanders urged to stay at home on Thursday

ISLANDERS are being urged to stay at home on Thursday when Jersey is set to be hit by 85mph winds from Storm Ciarán.

The government issued the message as the Island prepares for what could be one of the worst weather events since the Great Storm of 1987.

All government schools will be closed, and a decision on whether to reopen on Friday will be made after an assessment of any damage.

Private schools and early years providers are also being advised to shut.

Islanders are being told to only visit the Hospital on Thursday if it is an emergency, or they have been contacted and expressly asked to attend.

If patients have any questions or concerns, they should contact their relevant department. Day centres will be closed and home births are being suspended. The Emergency Department will be open as usual for life-threatening or serious illnesses.

The Airport will be closed to commercial aircraft, but will remain open for emergency and medical flights. It is due to reopen on Friday following an inspection of the airfield and buildings. All ferry services have also been cancelled.

The government is also urging Islanders to stay away from coastal areas, and boat owners are being asked to ensure their vessels are secured.

The storm gate in Elizabeth Marina will close today.
