MOVES to help young Islanders understand the benefits of growing their own food have received a boost with a donation to finance a polytunnel for growing fruit and vegetables.

Condor Ferries has provided cash from its community fund to enable the purchase of the polytunnel at Sheep Shed Jersey, a family farm in St Lawrence.

The new greenhouse will be used as part of the farm’s playgroup sessions, which teach pre-school and older children the benefits and enjoyment from gardening and agriculture.

Paris Maddocks, proprietor of Sheep Shed Jersey, said: “Agriculture has been our passion for many years, so it is fabulous to see the youngsters who attend our twice weekly sessions gain new skills, learn to grow their own food, eat healthily and spend time outdoors on our allotment and site.

“The support of Condor is really appreciated, as it helps us increase the range and scope of activities we can offer, which already reaches 600 local families each month.”

Condor’s community fund was originally established in 2019 and supports Islanders in both Jersey and Guernsey who give up their time to develop community projects. The fund’s priority was to reward bids with a focus on sustainability, local benefit and enjoyment for others, a spokesperson confirmed.
