UNEMPLOYMENT continues to fall, according to the latest figures published by Statistics Jersey.

The number of Islanders registered as actively seeking work at the end of September was 700, 40 fewer than the previous quarter once seasonal adjustments had been made, and 110 down on the same period last year.

Women outnumbered men by 420 to 280. The latest figures show a continuing decline in unemployment from a recent peak in June 2020 early in the pandemic when 2,300 were registered as actively seeking work.

At the end of last month, there was a slight increase in the number of long-term actively seeking work – those registered for more than 12 months – which was up from 170 to 180, although numbers are 30 fewer than a year earlier.

While Islanders who are unemployed are not required to register as actively seeking work, they cannot receive income support without registering and 90% of those on the register were receiving income support, the latest analysis shows.

There were more women than men in all the age groups between the ages of 25 and 54, but men constituted the largest number among those aged 16 to 24 and those between 55 and 64.
