THE importance of giving money rather than objects to victims in humanitarian emergencies will be explained to Islanders at a special discussion this month.

Experts from the Red Cross are due to give a talk on the issue on Wednesday 18 October.

They will explain that in the past 18 months there has been an outpouring of support from Islanders keen to help those affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the earthquakes in southern Turkey, with parish halls overwhelmed with donations of sleeping bags, toiletries and clothes.

But cash is often a more effective and empowering form of humanitarian aid – giving recipients more flexibility and also greater dignity.

The event will offer Islanders the opportunity to hear from experts in the field of humanitarian aid, gain insights into the impact of cash assistance, and learn how individuals can make a positive difference in times of crisis.

Speakers will also be taking questions from the audience.

International Development Minister Carolyn Labey, who is also chair of Jersey Overseas Aid, said: “Cash assistance is a vital mechanism in the humanitarian toolkit and one that JOA prioritises when responding to emergencies.

“I am delighted to be welcoming one of our most trusted and established partners, the British Red Cross, to discuss this emotive and highly topical issue and encourage all Islanders to join the discussion.”

The event will be held at Jersey College for Girls’ assembly hall from 5.45pm to 7.30pm. Tickets are free and available to all Jersey residents but capacity is limited so places should be reserved online by going to British Red Cross Event: Cash Assistance in Humanitarian Aid on eventbrite.co.uk.
