A 22-YEAR-OLD man who drove off a ferry at the Elizabeth Terminal while over the legal alcohol limit has been fined £1,600 and banned from the roads for 15 months.

Christopher William James Caine came to the Island from Liverpool to work as an electrician.

But the Magistrate’s Court heard that on 27 August his grey Volkswagen Golf was stopped by Customs officers as he came through the ferry terminal.

St Helier Centenier Shirley Madden said they smelt alcohol on his breath and alerted the police, who arrested him on suspicion of drink-driving.

A breath test at police headquarters gave a reading of 58 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal maximum is 35 micrograms.

Caine pleaded guilty to the charge. Relief Magistrate Sarah Fitz allowed him to pay the fine at the rate of £200 per month.
