La Collette hazardous waste and JCG ‘break-out space’ on Planning Committee agenda

THE Planning Committee has a busy agenda on Thursday for its first meeting of the new political term, with discussion points including whether two fields next to a school should become a ‘break-out space’ for pupils.

States Members on the committee are also due to decide whether huge headlands of hazardous waste at La Collette – which have built up over the past 20 years without permission – should remain.

Jersey College for Girls is again seeking permission to change the use of parts of two fields east of its preparatory school from agriculture to ‘educational amenity with associated boundary fence and landscaping works’.

This is the second time the application has come before the committee. The first time, last December, it was rejected because of concerns that such a change could limit public access.

JCG hopes it has overcome this by reducing the size of the proposed ‘break-out space’ and removing a security gate from the application.

An application to demolish a redundant pumping station and stepped scrubland behind it on Gouray Hill, and build a three-bedroom home in its place, is also on the agenda.

The plot is next to public stairs that link Mont de Gouray with, eventually, the top of Mont de la Guerande, which runs above Gorey’s well-known cotîl.

The application has prompted more than 30 public comments, including from the National Trust, which argues that the proposed development is unsympathetic to its surroundings.

There are two applications under consideration on Thursday for the Palms Campsite in Route de Vinchelez, St Ouen. The first is to change the use of a two-bedroom staff flat into a residential unit, and the second is to install five two-person ‘camping pods’ at the site.

The members of the Planning Committee are Constable Philip Le Sueur (chair), Deputy Steve Luce (vice-chair), Constables Deidre Mezbourian, Kevin Lewis, Marcus Troy and Richard Honeycombe, and Deputies Mary Le Hegarat, Andy Howell, Alex Curtis and Tom Coles.

The meeting will be held at St Paul’s Centre and begins at 9.30 am.
