ISLANDERS have been left baffled by the appearance of a mysterious metallic object on the north coast.

The large balloon-shaped piece of ‘space debris’, which is attached to a parachute, appeared overnight near Les Platons.

Dozens of walkers came face-to-face with the cordoned-off structure this morning and have since taken to social media to speculate about what it is.

Celine Gimenez posted pictures of the new arrival on Facebook and wrote: ‘Just back from my dog walk, north of the island and saw this. What is it? Looks like it’s just appeared there… The red thing looks like a parachute… Anyone know? Heard any noise?’

Several Islanders suggested that it was clearly the beginning of an alien invasion, while some mused that it could be related to Russia’s recent failed Moon landing.

One Islander suggested that the ‘Clangers have landed’, while another said that Dandara were ‘already trying to get planning permission to turn it into four flats’.
