A VAN driver who was found to be over the blood-alcohol limit has been banned from driving despite telling a court that losing his licence could ‘ruin’ his life.

The Magistrate’s Court heard that Grzegorz Piotr Sikora’s van was involved in a minor accident in St Clement at 3.30pm on 22 April.

He had been drinking vodka and lemonade the previous evening but, the court heard, had felt he would be OK to drive the next day.

However, St Martin Centenier Steven Laffoley-Edwards said a blood test showed he still had 128 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, above the legal maximum of 80 milligrams.

Sikora said he had unexpectedly had to drive for work on the day of the accident and added: ‘This could ruin my life.’

Advocate Stephen Wauchope, defending, told the court: ‘He pleaded guilty at the first opportunity.

‘He is very apologetic.’

Relief Magistrate David Le Cornu fined Sikora £1,600 and banned him from the roads for 15 months.
