DOZENS of Islanders were woken by a mystery loud bang in the early hours of today.

People took to social media to say they heard the blast at about 1.30am.

It is believed the bang came from St Helier, but was heard in several other parishes.

Writing on Facebook, one Islander said: ‘It woke me up in terror. It was so close & loud… sounded like a gun shot..there were 2x… the second not as loud as the first. I waited for sirens but there weren’t any so assumed it was left over fireworks??’

The States police confirmed that the force did not receive any calls, but the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service were called out at about 1.40am to investigate a bang and a ‘strange odour’ at the bottom of Pier Road, near Mulcaster Street.

Island Energy also attended, but nothing was found, the States police said.
