TRIBUTES have been paid to a stalwart of the local motoring scene and JEP columnist, John Boothman, who died last week.

Mr Boothman, a long-standing member of the Jersey Old Motor Club, first served on the committee and eventually as vice-president before he took on the role of president in 2010, retiring in 2013.

He was editor of the club’s newsletter from 2010 until 2016 and produced the Annual Gazette for ten years, a position he gave up only last year. Mr Boothman was instrumental in reviving the annual inter-club visits with the Guernsey Old Car Club and was responsible for organising many memorable club trips to France.

‘Mr Boothman was always willing to spare his time and give valuable advice and, accompanied by his wife Sue, they rarely missed club functions,’ said club member Graham Le Lay.

‘Many will remember the club annual picnics at their fabulous home in St Lawrence. The club also has the Boothman Memorial Trophy donated to the club in memory of Tommy Boothman, John’s late father, who was also a club member, keeping the Boothman name alive in the club.

‘An icon of the motoring world, he will be missed by many in Jersey and abroad where he was a member of many car clubs and a regular attendee of the annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, but no more so than at the JOMC.’

Mr Boothman was also a columnist for the JEP and his contributions, both opinions and letters, will be missed.

An obituary will be published in the JEP in due course.
