A MAN with 57 previous convictions for shoplifting has admitted four more thefts from St Helier shops.

James Craig Ring (34) admitted stealing Hugo Boss items from de Gruchy department store on 17 May and 11 June last year and taking a bottle of perfume from Boots on 20 February this year.

In the Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 27 July, Ring denied another theft from de Gruchy, of a bottle of perfume worth £283, on Saturday 22 July. But he changed his plea to guilty after the court was shown a photograph of him inside the store.

He also admitted two separate charges of possession of cannabis, on 7 July last year and on Tuesday 25 July.

He was remanded in custody until his sentencing on 14 September.

Ring had been due to appear in court on Tuesday but failed to turn up. Advocate Adam Harrison, prosecuting, argued that he should be denied bail because of the risk he may fail to appear in court on the scheduled date again or commit another offence.

But Advocate Chris Baglin, defending, asked the court to grant him ‘the chance to prove himself’.

However, Assistant Magistrate Sarah Fitz refused Ring bail, telling him: ‘You have a terrible record involving larceny.

‘The court had already allowed you bail on condition you did not go into de Gruchy, and that was breached.’
