THE States police have launched an investigation after a Manche Iles Express ferry crew member died following an ‘incident’ on the Victoria Pier.

Police were called to the Harbour at 3.26am on Sunday morning after reports of a man in the water.

In a statement, the States police said: ‘On arrival the man had been pulled out of the water by crew members of the Manche Iles Express. Ambulance crew also attended and transported the man to hospital but he sadly passed away a short time later.’

Another man who entered the water to help was also treated at hospital but later released.

The incident is under investigation and a file will be prepared for the Deputy Viscount, police have said.

In a statement issued on Monday morning, the French ferry company said that its ‘thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the family at this difficult time’. It added that it was working closely with the authorities to investigate the circumstances and causes of the incident.

A spokesperson for Ports of Jersey said they extended ‘our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased Manche Iles Express crew member, following this sad incident’.

‘We would also like to express our sympathy for his fellow Manche Iles crew members.
There are ongoing enquiries underway to try to determine the cause of the incident,’ they added.
