A FULL-size replica of the first ship to circumnavigate the Earth is to visit Jersey next week.

Nao Victoria is set to arrive in the Harbour on Tuesday – replacing the previously announced planned visit of El Galeón, which has suffered mechanical issues and has been confined to port in St Malo.

The ship, which was built in 1991, will be open to the public between next Wednesday and Sunday, with tickets available from a stall on the Albert Pier.

The planned Spanish food festival will also still go ahead on the pier between next Friday and Sunday.

Nao Victoria is a full-size replica of the only survivor of the five ships that set sail on Portuguese-born navigator Ferdinand Magellan’s global expedition from Spain in 1519.

The ship – commanded by Juan Sebastian Elcano – returned to the port of Seville in 1522 after sailing around the world in an epic voyage which saw Magellan killed in the Battle of Mactan in 1521 in the present-day Philippines.
