A TWO-METRE tall hare has become the latest addition to Durrell’s Tortoise Takeover.

The sculpture – which was painted by local artist Nick Romeril – arrived at St Catherine’s Breakwater on a Jersey Seafaris rib on Monday morning.

Each week the hare will ‘hop’ around, visiting the various giant tortoise sculptures that are already scattered around the Island – in a nod to Aesop’s fable ‘the tortoise and the hare’.

Seafaris director Dan Luce said it had been a ‘real privilege’ to be involved with the project.

Durrell chief executive Lesley Dickie said the addition of the hare on the trail added a ‘fun twist’ to the Takeover.

Ferryspeed helped Durrell with the transportation and storage of the tortoise sculptures and is sponsoring the hare, with freight operations manager Romeo Albuquerque saying the project had been a ‘delight’ to work on.

The giant hare will – alongside the tortoise sculptures – eventually be auctioned off to raise funds for a new reptile and amphibian house at Jersey Zoo.
