DECKING worth £2,000 that was stolen from a seaside restaurant in St Clement last weekend has been returned by the culprit following an appeal on social media.
The panels were taken between 12.30pm on Saturday and Monday morning from the Rice Bowl at Grève d’Azette, with the restaurant currently closed for refurbishment.
Hayley Yu, who co-owns the restaurant with her brother Stephen, of Awabi restaurant in Halkett Place, said that CCTV footage showed a white van arriving at the site and leaving an hour later.
This prompted them to launch an appeal on social media for more information, which received an ‘incredible’ response, according to Mrs Yu.
In an update posted to Awabi’s social media accounts on Thursday, the pair said CCTV footage showed a white van returning to the scene with the culprit ‘slinging timber’ into the Rice Bowl car park on Wednesday evening.
‘It leaves, before returning later with the rest. A quick phone call later, the van is blocked in and confronted.
‘It was him,’ the post read, adding that it had been returned ‘damaged and worthless’.
The post added: ‘But, it’s a bittersweet moment. Peel back the stripey top, black mask and swag bag, and behind every crim is a human – and this one was visibly upset and desperate.
‘Dad [Ken Yu] is most likely going to drop the charges (we wish he was this lenient with us) but Jersey’s most-wanted man will be feeling the full weight of the law, so let’s allow this to run it’s course.
‘I know we’re all baying for blood – but with this Island being as small as it is, we don’t feel the need to name and shame them and we hope you feel the same.
‘So no smear campaigns, and definitely no being dragged down King Street naked and pelted with rotten fruit please.’
The States police said that investigations were continuing.
