THE government is ‘reviewing traffic-management plans’ ahead of further work in the Tunnel after a lane closure at the weekend left many roads in town gridlocked.
Hundreds of motorists were stuck in queues which stretched as far back as Georgetown when the westbound lane was shut to enable work to be carried out on the sewerage system.
The closure caught motorists by surprise, with dozens taking to social media to ask why there was no advance notice.
In a press notice yesterday, the government said that ‘while “advanced notice of upcoming work” signs were put up ahead of the project, and details posted on gov.je, the Infrastructure and Environment team acknowledges that further public communications should have been issued and we apologise for any inconvenience caused’.
The government said that an existing sewage pipe was being upgraded and a second was being installed to ‘upgrade the sewerage capacity to transfer flows from the east of the Island to Bellozanne Sewage Treatment Works’.
During the rest of the project, which is expected to finish on 24 July, the westbound lane will continue to be closed from 7pm Fridays to 6.30am Mondays.
During weekdays, the Tunnel will be open in both directions but work will continue at the western end of the westbound lane and delays are likely.
The south-side footpath will be closed throughout the project.
