A 31-YEAR-OLD man who crashed his car and did not report the accident has been fined £1,000 – and warned he could lose his licence if he commits another offence.
The Magistrate’s Court heard that Grant Barry Felix Hepburn crashed his silver Honda on Mont de la Hague in St Peter on 17 February this year. The car skidded in wet conditions at 7.25am and was badly damaged when it hit a bank.
St Peter Centenier John Camara, prosecuting, said Hepburn moved the car away from the bend on the road but did not inform the police because the battery in his mobile phone was flat.
However, he walked to a payphone and phoned his mother, asking her to pick him up. When they arrived at her home the police were already there.
The court heard that Hepburn had a previous conviction from November for driving without due care and attention.
He admitted the charge of failing to report an accident, and Advocate Chris Baglin, defending, pointed out that he had done so at the earliest opportunity.
The Magistrate, Bridget Shaw, endorsed Hepburn’s licence as well as imposing the fine, and told him: ‘I hope this experience will remind you just how much you value your licence.‘You were very close to losing it.’
