TEACHERS are due to take part in a demonstration in the Royal Square next month as part of planned strikes stemming from a pay dispute with government.

Earlier this week it emerged that members of two teaching unions had voted to strike after rejecting a 7.9% pay offer.

The NEU have announced that ‘a demonstration of teachers, parents and supporters’ is planned to take place outside the States Chamber on Wednesday 5 July, which the union has said would also mark an initial day of strike action ‘at all 33 States of Jersey schools’.

NASUWT members have also voted in favour of strikes, with the union currently considering a ‘timetable for action’ that is likely to be launched in the next academic year.

NEU regional secretary Maria Fawcett said: ‘Industrial action is always a last resort, but unfortunately our hardworking and committed members have been left with no alternative.

‘Teachers in the Island have seen their pay decline in real terms over the last decade.

‘As well as this impacting on their daily lives it has created a worsening recruitment and retention crisis which is impacting negatively on the classroom.’
