THE Island’s competition watchdog is carrying out a review of Ports of Jersey.
Jersey’s Competition Regulatory Authority is undertaking the analysis to make sure that updated regulations can be in place for 2025, having last reviewed Ports around four years ago.
It will consider a number of factors, including prices, quality of service and reporting standards under the current licensing regime.
In a statement, the regulator said: ‘Almost everyone in Jersey is reliant on air and sea port operations and services in some way. Since the incorporation of Ports of Jersey Ltd in 2015, the authority licenses port operations with a duty to best protect and further the interests of port users, and to promote competition where appropriate. The authority is also required to ensure provision is made to satisfy all reasonable demands for port operations and services, and that they are provided efficiently and effectively.’
JCRA chief executive Tim Ringsdore added: ‘Our primary duty under the relevant law is to best protect and further the interests of users of port operations and, by extension, benefit consumers.’
The JCRA intends to publish a consultation on future regulation in the summer, with the full review due to be completed in early 2024.
