Skaters step onto the new facility at Les Quennevais for the first time

THE new Les Quennevais skate park is now open.

Hundreds attended the long-awaited launch of the £1.9 million facility this afternoon.

And construction work on a satellite skate park at South Hill could start next year, the government has said.

Principal engineer Oliver Brewster said feasibility work at the site would be progressed following the launch of the new skate park at Les Quennevais today.

The new Les Quennevais facility – which was originally scheduled to open last summer – has experienced a number of delays owing to requests for design changes from groups who will use the arena, as well as supply-chain issues and more recently bad weather.

Commenting on potential satellite facilities, Mr Brewster said: ‘The existing St John’s skate park is not a government facility and is not on government land. We were exploring options in late 2021 to contribute to an enhancement of this facility. However, for reasons relating to operational issues with their existing facility, St John’s Recreation Centre did not wish to take this further.’

He added: ‘We are in the latter stages of some further feasibility work at South Hill and are planning to progress this following the opening of Les Quennevais. Subject to the outcomes of the feasibility work and any planning application, construction would commence in 2024. This aligns with the current Government Plan funding allocation.’
