EMERGENCY services are moving towards ‘business as usual’ and standing down officers from Grands Vaux following Tuesday’s flooding.

Torrential rain hit the Island with dozens of families forced to evacuate their homes as several housing estates were left under several feet of water.

The government has confirmed that all roads in the Grands Vaux area have now reopened although drivers are still being urged to take care as some debris may remain on the roads.

Both the States police and Jersey Fire and Rescue Service have been on-site but have begun to stand down some personnel.

Andium Homes has opened an on-site office to help those whose properties have been affected. Jersey Electricity have checked affected properties where accessible and is confident that the electrical systems in those properties have not been impacted. However, any residents who have concerns can call the JEC emergency line on 505050.

Public health advice has been issued to warn Islanders not to swim in the sea. Sewage overspill sites have been identified in different areas, including 11 beach locations. Signage has been put up on these beaches and near affected areas and will be kept in place until the water has been tested and cleared from any pollutants to avoid any risk to the public.

Grands Vaux School and youth club, which have been shut for the past two days, will re-open tomorrow. Outside areas of the school have been damaged but the school building itself has not been damaged.

The government has also confirmed that water levels are continuing to recede in Island reservoirs, although they are still high, and that Jersey Water is continuing to monitor the situation.
