ISLANDERS have been thanked by the Chief Minister for the roles they played in responding to the tragedy at Pier Road, which occurred exactly a month ago.
In a statement to mark the one-month anniversary of ten people losing their lives when the Haut du Mont residential block in St Helier was destroyed in an explosion, Deputy Kristina Moore praised their generosity and strength of community spirit.
Deputy Moore said: ‘This incident devastated the families and friends of those who lost their lives, as well as displacing a number of residents from their homes in the surrounding area.
‘This incident shocked Islanders and people around the world. My thoughts remain with everyone impacted.
‘It is through difficult times, such as these, that we see the generosity and strength of community spirit that is a hallmark of our Island.’
The Chief Minister said she had been overwhelmed by the way that businesses, individuals and community groups had come together to help.
In an interview with the JEP to mark the anniversary, police chief Robin Smith said that the inquiry into the incident, dubbed Operation Spire, was likely to last at least six months.
Deputy Moore said the government’s focus was on the recovery work and providing assistance to those who had been displaced, and to the families of the victims.
She added: ‘The police and health-and-safety investigation continues, and the States of Jersey Police are working closely with those agencies involved, including Andium Homes, to make sure that everyone impacted by this tragedy has the support that they need.
‘I want to offer my sincere thanks to everyone who has provided their support to those touched by this tragedy, ensuring they get the help they need during this difficult time.’
