A JERSEY inventor intent on revolutionising the art of cooking has been selected from more than 2,000 applicants to join a business creation programme by a Silicon Valley innovation centre.

It is the latest accolade for Subina Shami – developer of the automated multi-cooker, the Cuisine Machine – who last year received the Global Women Inventors and Innovators Network exemplary diamond award for her prototype kitchen appliance.

Mrs Shami said she was ‘absolutely over the moon’ to learn she was one of 40 successful applicants to LG Nova’s Mission for the Future ‘search for innovative concepts and transformative solutions that create a positive impact on people and planet’.

Success in the competition brings with it the possibility of business collaboration with LG Electronics, a company that develops innovations across the globe from home entertainment to kitchen and laundry products. The opportunity presented itself when Mrs Shami was approached by Dr Sebastian Meyer, principal innovation manager at LG Electronics, who pointed her towards the competition.

‘I was delighted to find out that I was one of the companies and entrepreneurs that LG Nova will be working with to see if there is potential for business collaboration with LG Electronics. I am expecting an e-meeting within the next few weeks with John Han, who is the head of home appliances at LG Electronics,’ she said.

Mrs Shami hopes the virtual encounter will lead to the commercialisation of a design that has also secured recognition in the European Product Design Awards, the British Invention Show Awards and the Good Design Awards.

Her Cuisine Machine differs from traditional multi-cookers because it not only controls the pressure, temperature and method of cooking but also introduces ingredients separately into the cooking cycle in recognition of their different characteristics, and allows users to take advantage of pre-programmed recipe cards.

Mrs Shami, a former accountant working for the government of Jersey, conceived the idea of the kitchen product back in 2009 and ten years later supervised the creation of the prototype with 4D Products Ltd.
