FAMILIES who have lived in Jersey for fewer than five years are to be given support payments to help them cope with the rising cost of living.

From 3 January, parents with children aged under 18 who have not yet lived here for five years will be eligible to apply for a one-off payment based on the number of children they have.

Parents must be ‘registered’ workers with a gross household income during 2022 of no more than £36,000 for a single person or £48,000 for a couple. The payments will be £250 for one child and £500 for two or more.

Earlier this year, the States Assembly approved an emergency mini-budget designed to help Islanders with the cost-of-living crisis. As part of that, the Assembly agreed to provide some additional financial support to parents living in Jersey, but who have been on the Island fewer than five years and do not qualify for the Island’s other benefits.

Social Security Minister Elaine Millar said: ‘I hope these payments will help around 250-to-300 families that have been in the Island for less than five years and are not eligible for Jersey’s means-tested benefits.

‘As well as providing the bonus payment, my officers will also be taking this opportunity to give advice and check that these families are fully aware of all the government services available to them.’

  • During January and February, parents will be able to apply online on the gov.je website, by phone on 444444 or in person by making an appointment with Customer and Local Services in La Motte Street. Support will be provided to non-English speakers.
